Let’s count some ways this is amazing:

1) Twisty, discordant Sonic Youth arrangements, but without that air of “daring you not ‘get it’”  You could say hi to these dudes at the merch table and tell them they ruled without feeling like they were going to secretly make fun of you for not knowing enough about Steve Reich.

2) That Mat’s-ey feeling of clever beeriness.

3) Naked awkwarness that evokes emo without the indulgence (this mofo is 2:09)

4) Lyrics that seem sexy and twisted at the same time.  That whole pileup at the beginning echoes some straight Cap’n Jazz shit w/r/t musicality of language as an expressive tool.

5) It’s sorta hard to tell if he’s riffing on accupuncture, fucking or just pulling the proverbial thorns out of yr feet.

So yeah, if “Icky Mettle” and “Foolish” haven’t rocked you yet, you either aren’t into some of the best indie/emo-ey stuff ever made or simply don’t understand the value of cheap beer, porches that stay party-worthy year round and taking the ache of rejection in stride.
