I hope the writer is wrong.  I don’t want to live in a country with a third-world level of anti-intellectualism.  However, I think that the miracle of democracy is that we get the government we deserve.  America may very well be at the point where the fearful ignoramuses have outbred the smart people by a large enough factor that, as a people, we no longer have the cognitive capacity to course correct.  We may, in a meaningful sense, be too irrevocably dumb and resentful to be ruled by anyone BUT Sarah Palin.  I want us to be better than that.  I want us to reject the idea that a staggeringly dimwitted, ignorant woman should not be in a position to run the country just because she’s “more like us.”  If that is indeed our ethos, if having a fucking clue is a politicol liability, then we are deservedly damned.
