Lifter Puller- Nice Nice

I love the sinister, kaleidoscopic feel of this one. Twist is up in menacing jokes, throw it all at the cheap seats. The inevitability of The Hold Steady going for more obvious forms of affirmation is obvious here; it’s an incredibly well-written song, but you can see how it was more palpable to have the anthemic edge of a rock band at play than the gnarl of unremitting skeeziness that’s at play here. I feel like there’s a level on which The Hold Steady are (although ostensibly a classic rock revival) more of a recapitulation of the punk spirit whereas Lifter Puller were more avowadly post-punk. There’s more fallout and it’s half-life is never shy about bleeding out to the rest of the album in Lifter Puller’s world and this song is pretty true to that spirit.

seems about the right face to be making.

Though this is a pretty dead-on article on some levels, the last time I had this kind of night it was actually more decent than I expected. Maybe it’s the empathy that a degree of distance and burning ambition provide (and the raging smugness/light benevolance that grows from having actually escaped their mindset), but it’s nice to go back and think, “Hey, these people weren’t bad, they just weren’t next-level enough to avoid being pricks to the weird (intimidating?) artsy kid when all I wanted was some basic level of human acknowledgement.” All is forgiven… you fucking assholes.

I’m a little bummed that they left the third act off this song. They jump into “So if you dare to find me…” turns me into a puddle of cheer everytime.
