Here’s the thing. Weezy is not always brilliant. He’s capable of brilliance, and whatever confluence of his one-of-a-kind-mind and whatever he’s fueling it with is canonically impressive, but I really hope that, in the long run, he doesn’t end up destroying his gifts or himself by overindulging.

I know that, personally, I have to take time off from my own permutations of the mystery cup because I don’t want to fry what I’ve been given and have worked to develop for my whole life. Maybe it’s not an issue for him. Maybe he’s too far gone to even tell it’s happening. I don’t know any more than I know if people who speak in tongues are channeling the Holy Spirit. What I do know is enough basic neuroscience to vouch for the value of laying off for a round of sobriety, exercise and solid nutrition when shit starts to get too weird.

Finally bought Casiotone For The Painfully Alone’s “Vs. Children” last night. It’s definitely a front runner for my album of the year. Granted, it’s been a weak year, but nearly every song has a moment of luminous horror in it. Owen Ashworth is seldom loquacious, but he’s a brutally efficient storyteller and I’m consistently in awe of his ability to turn three details and a gesture into a feeling of irrevocable damage.

There really need to be more modern punk bands that mix heavy and chaotic with expansively pretty while completely omitting the schmaltz.
